Second Annual National Retail Beef Backer® Awards

The Beef Checkoff Program (Checkoff) is excited to announce the second annual national Retail Beef Backer®  Awards contest (Contest) to recognize retailers who have demonstrated commitment to outstanding beef marketing and merchandising.

Who May Enter   Supermarket retailers (Retailers) who in the USA, with or without funding from the Checkoff, have (a) started and completed a beef Promotion between October 1, 2007, and September 30, 2008 (the Period), and/or (b) conducted a beef Program, and/or (c) have engaged in a beef Activity during the Period are eligible to enter. See the entry form for examples of Promotions, Programs and Activities.

Categories   There are two entry categories – Independents (less than 11 retail stores) and Chains (11 or more retail stores).

How to Enter   Retailers enter the Contest by submitting a completed entry form together with all supporting material (the Submission).

Submission Deadline   To be considered, Retailers must mail their Submission, postmarked no later than November 1, 2008, to:

Judges  

The Checkoff will appoint a panel of beef industry professionals to select winners. Judges will act by majority vote and their decisions will be final. (Also, judges will take reasonable precautions to maintain the confidentiality of performance data contained in Submissions such as percentage increases in sales.)

Award Basis  

The judges will select three winners: one winner from each of the two categories (see Categories above) and a third winner from all contestants combined (Innovation Award).

The Category Awards will be based on the quality, quantity, variety, customer support and effectiveness of the contestants’ beef merchandizing efforts as evidenced by their Submissions and the demonstrations of beef Promotions, Programs and Activities in them, e.g., through evidence of merchandising visuals, point-of-sale displays, sales results (expressed as percentage increase, not actual sales figures), customer feedback (see link to meat case and website template forms for encouraging feedback) and utilization of Checkoff support and materials.

The Innovation Award will go to the contestant with the single most innovative Promotion or Program.


Award Presentations  

Winners will be announced at the 2009 Cattle Industry Annual Convention & Trade Show (January 2009 in Phoenix, AZ).

Contest Prizes   Each winner will receive:

  • An expenses-paid trip for two to the 2009 Cattle Industry Annual Convention & Trade Show (January 2009 in Phoenix, AZ).

  • Significant exposure in major trade publications.

  • Acknowledgement of its efforts among their peers. 

  • Recognition at the 2009 Annual Meat Conference Product Tasting Reception.

  • Use of the official 2008 Beef Backer Awards logo in advertisements, point-of-sale displays and other promotional materials as a sign of the 2008 winner’s retail accomplishments.

Getting Customer and Vendor Partner Input

There is an opportunity for your customers and vendor partners to have a voice in convincing judges that you deserve a Beef Backer Award! We encourage you to attach letters or emails to your submission showing, in their words, their support for your program. A template form is also available for you to post at your meat case and/or on your website encouraging your customers to submit comments for your application.  Vendor partners are encouraged to provide input on company letterhead. All comments will be held in confidence.
