Utilizing Protein Messaging at Your Meat Case

Your Nutrition Toolbox

Your customers are getting on the health and wellness bandwagon. Throughout their shopping trips, they see a variety of symbols to help them make healthy choices. What happens when they arrive at the meat department? How are you helping them make healthy choices?

Jump on the bandwagon too! Seize the opportunity to welcome your customers to the home of protein. Make it clear that beef is THE source for the protein your customers want and need as part of a healthy diet. When you educate your customers about beef nutrition, you put yourself in a position to become their first stop for protein.

Get started today:

Step 1: Review the Guide to Beef Nutrition Messages to select your key messages. This guide includes a complete list of nutrition messages, including suggestions regarding where to most effectively use those messages.

Step 2: Finalize POS. Create your own materials using the above messaging, order existing materials or request files to customize existing POS templates.

Step 3: Educate your associates: Help them understand how the protein in beef is part of a healthy, balanced diet. Use information found in the Sample Training Manual to prepare your team. Be sure to let the rest of the store, including any dietitians on staff, know about the change that is about to hit the meat case. Ask the dietitian to help educate customers during your launch.

Step 4: Launch the POS.

One caveat: There may come a time when you are not allowed to promote nutrients at the meat case without having on-pack nutrition labeling in place. When, you ask? Good question! Not until the Nutrition Labeling of Ground or Chopped Meat or Poultry Products and Single-Ingredient Products Rule, or one similar to it, becomes law. It is anticipated that the rule will require retailers who include nutrient messaging either on packages or at the point-of-sale to include on-pack nutrition facts panels on all fresh meat packages.
