SUPERVALU® Wins Beef Backer® Award in Innovator Category

The Beef Checkoff Program announced SUPERVALU as a winner of the third annual national Retail Beef Backer® Awards program in the Innovator category for their commitment to outstanding beef marketing and merchandising programs. Presentations were made at the 2010 Cattle Industry Annual Convention & Trade Show in San Antonio, Texas, on January 28, 2010.

As the winner of the Innovator award, SUPERVALU was recognized as a retailer who is an innovative leader in the industry through marketing, merchandising and the promotion of beef.
SUPERVALU is one of the nation’s largest companies in the U.S. grocery channel with estimated annual sales of $41 billion. They hold the leading market share positions in many markets across the United States with approximately 2,500 retail grocery locations.
In May 2009, SUPERVALU announced the launch of the Stockman & Dakota® brand of premium USDA Choice Angus beef, part of the company’s comprehensive new beef program designed to position its stores as the unparalleled destination for fresh, quality beef. The new program rolled out in more than 1,100 stores nationwide in chains which included Acme®, Albertsons®, bigg’s®, Cub Foods®, Farm Fresh®, Hornbacher’s®, Jewel-Osco®, Shaw’s/Star Market™, Shop ‘n Save® and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy®.
In addition to Stockman & Dakota brand products, the company’s beef program includes a new store-branded beef line that provides improved quality over existing offerings at a good value.
In total, the program encompasses 60 different cuts of beef featuring improved merchandising, new signage and enhanced service in the meat department. Consumers can now find useful information, tips and tools both in-store and online to help them make more informed beef purchases. The launch was supported by a comprehensive marketing campaign and in-store support. Each tactic supported the overall “Beef Spoken Here” campaign designed to position SUPERVALU’s stores as the destination for beef.
